Vernon Hills celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008 and has grown to just over 20,000 residents. Hawthorn Shopping Center now known as Westfield Hawthorn was one of the first major shopping centers in Lake County. Vernon Hills has continued to add more shopping. You can find just about any major retailer in town. The majority of housing has been built in the last 25 years. There is commuter rail service and bus service available in town. One of the latest residential developments, Gregg's Landing developed on part of the former Hawthorn Melody Farms and John Cuneo estate. Many people tour the Cuneo museum that was preserved.
